Chicago Cubs beat Seattle Mariners

On Tuesday, April 30, the Chicago Cubs defeated the Seattle Mariners 6-5 in Seattle, Washington.  The Cubs victory was largely confirmed by Kyle Schwarber’s 8th inning home run.  With two outs in the top of the 8th inning, Kyle Schwarber hit a 2-run home run giving the Cubs the lead.

Cubs pitcher Brad Brach earned the win.  Brach is 3-0 for the season so far and provides a sense of reliability on the Cubs roster, says Gaurav Mohindra.

Cole Hamels started the game for Chicago.  He provided a great start by striking out seven in 5 1/3 innings.  He gave up four runs and six hits. Seattle’s Brandon Brennan struck out Javier Báezfinishing the seventh inning and got the first two outs of the eighth. Schwarbercrushed Brennan’s pitch into right field giving the Cubs the lead, and eventually the win.  It was Schwarber’shis first home run since April 8.

Seattle continued to fight to the end, as the first two batters reached base in the bottom of the ninth.  The game concluded when Tim Beckham grounded into a double play and Jay Bruce struck out to end the game.  The strikeout was a called 3rd strike with a runner in scoring position.  Nonetheless, the Cubs held on for the win.

Chicago

It was an exciting game between the Cubs and Mariners.  The Mariners led 5-4 in the 7th Inning.  Edwin Encarnacion hit a homerun giving the Mariners the lead.  It was his eight homerun of the season. 

There was a large Cub fan presence in Seattle for the game.  It was the Cubs first game in Seattle in 6 years.

The Cubs are playing Seattle again today at 5:40 PM.  Afterward, they are back in Chicago for a 3-game series against the Cardinals.  Yesterday’s win provides Chicago its third consecutive victory and positive momentum entering into May.   Currently, Chicago is in second place in the National League Central Division.  The St. Louis Cardinals are leading the division with 19 wins.  It’s still very early in the season, but it’s anticipated that the Cubs and Cardinals will be the main contenders, says Gaurav Mohindra.

In May, the Cubs will be playing the Floriday Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers, Cincinatti Reds, Washington Nationals, Philadelphia Phillies, and Houston Astros. It will be a busy and important month for the Cubs to gain a solid positioning in the Central Division.
